Unified Threat Management
A firewall with a bunch of other “non-firewall” features on the same box. Solutions that use a single-pass to look at the traffic don’t want to be bunched with this crowd. See Firewall, Next-Generation Firewall.

Palo Alto Networks
August 14th, 2009 · No Comments
Palo Alto Networks has shifted the firewall paradigm from port and protocol to application and user. Their App-ID technology uses signatures to identify and control applications on the network regardless of port, protocol or evasive tactic. It identifies encrypted SSL applications too. They integrate with Active Directory so you can control traffic based on users and groups (eDirectory and other LDAP integration are on the way). They block a wide range of threats and unauthorized file transfers and control web surfing. Top it off with QOS, SSL-VPN and a tad of DLP. (Link: Palo Alto Networks)

Safe@Office
April 16th, 2009 · 1 Comment
Checkpoint’s Safe@Office UTM is designed for small businesses. It offers all of the expected features but something that sets it apart is a built-in EAP (Extended Authentication Protocol) authenticator eliminates the need for an external RADIUS server by tying WPA Enterprise and 802.1x access control to an internal user database. This ensures that both LAN and WLAN users securely sign on before gaining physical access to the network – NAC for small business.
