John Lilly, Mozilla CEO, complained about the clandestine Safari 3.1 install for Windows users. I think most users with half a brain will know if they have Safari or not and if they don’t want it, they can deselect the check box. Whatever your opinion, I think that is beside the point really. I think Mr. Lilly’s real concern is that Safari will probably have as many Windows users as Firefox has within a matter of months. A number that took Firefox years to earn. We knew this was coming.
Marco Arment declared last Summer:
Even accounting for out-of-commission iPods, users who ignore software updates, and existing Mac users, that’s still a quick way for Apple to capture 20-50 million Safari users whenever they want with a simple iTunes update.
The media will be hammering the “Apple installed spyware” theme, thereby explaining to the unwitting Windows users that they now have a really cool browser installed.
Watch this page to see if Safari starts climbing the ranks.
