How to Protect Your Kids from Typo Squatters

September 21st, 2007 · 1 Comment

It was a while ago, but Alice LaPlante lamented the run-in her daughter had with a porn site squatting on a typo of craigslist.com. While it wasn’t available at the time, concerned parents like Alice can use OpenDNS to protect you from inadvertently accessing porn sites and phishing sites. It also speeds your web experience as well because of their large cache. I guessed a typo of craigslist and OpenDNS blocked it as a porn site, so there you go. Free to boot.

You can quickly change your DNS settings on your local machine (Mac, Windows) but I recommend you change them on your router.

The magic numbers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
