I spoke to a network admin recently that runs a Mac network for a small architecture firm. Over the years, they have accumulated a good collection of Windows macro viruses in docs stored on his network. Since they weren’t affected by these viruses, they never bothered to clean them up. It is coming home to roost now, since they are having difficulty sending those files to anybody with email virus protection.

So what are you using? The Clam?

Umm, I guess I should be using something since I posted this. No, I have Sophos, but haven’t installed it on my Mac yet.

Oh, I might have meant you or they
Is there a reason to use Sophos over ClamX, in your opinion? I ask because I’m skeptical of the need for an investment above and beyond an open source solution given the threat landscape.

No reason in particular. The company I sell for is a Sophos partner so I have a “free” license. My risk tolerance and threat landscape dictate that even installing free AV costs more than the risk it mitigates so I haven’t done so yet. (I’m trying to sound as cool as your are
I wonder about your question all the time though since I sell Sophos. I do believe Sophos is better than an open source solution, but whether or not a company should buy it depends upon their own risk calculations. I still haven’t learned FAIR or else I could calculate this for them and provide them a better service.

By the way, that company is evaluating Sophos right now. Clean-up mechanisms are the most important to them since cleaning them all up by hand would take forever.
