What are the 5 things someone needs to be web-savvy? I’m not talking CSS or PHP type stuff. I’m talking beginner. Our world is separating into two groups: those that are web-savvy and those that aren’t. Those that “speak web” will benefit from the tremendous leverage the web provides. Those that are stuck using industrial-age survival tactics will fall behind. Here’s a list designed with the beginner in mind. Feel free to add or modify in the comments or by email.
5 Steps to (Start) Being Web-Savvy
- Get a Google account- Get started with Gmail, then sign up for their other services as needed.
- Get an RSS Reader – Real Simple Syndication. Think of it as a way to have new web page articles emailed to you, and you read them with an RSS reader. There are tons of readers out there. An easy one for beginners is Bloglines. One you see how it works, you can find one you like better.
- Sign up at del.icio.us – Organize your bookmarks and share them with others. Essential. Tag a page ‘for:jonsnetwork’ to send me a link.
- Get a blog – WordPress.com is a good place to start. Then burn your RSS feed at Feedburner and claim your blog at Technorati.
- There is a good chance you will have at least one reason to build a website in the future. It isn’t hard anymore. Research some of the open-source content management systems, like Joomla or Drupal and see how you can build a website in a few short hours. Joomla is probably better for beginners. You will have to know how to use FTP, and how to find a webhost.’

Hi Jon, thank you for the Internet tips. With the way technology changes so quickly, my personal Web knowledge and the tools I use needed an update. I just got a gmail account, and got started on Bloglines.com. It took less than 1/2 hr.

Hey Jon, when you say “Tag a page ‘for:jonsnetwork’ to send me a link” in your Step 3 above, what do you mean exactly? -thanks.

Jon – So really, a blog is just a webpage that people can post to, right? -I just created my blog, which is related to Long-Term Care (working in the field and getting into it), and I also claimed it at Technorati.com. -thanks again for the tips.

@ Aaron: No problem. If you have a del.icio.us account, you “bookmark” websites and they are saved to your account on the web. You tag them meaning you categorize them under “tips” or “microsoft” or something. If you want to send a link to someone else with an account, you tag it “for:their-account”…..it makes more sense once you have a delicious account….you can use ma.gnolia.com too. There are probably others.
